Annie has cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus. She is very week on her right side and she was still just losing the pedal on the right hand side at times but really did extremely well and was delighted with it.
As I expected, Jack is going to be more of a challenge. I may already have scared him off after just sitting him on it in the kitchen. I'll persevere with him and try in an open grassy space at the weekend.

Diane and her friend Neil are the first Borrowers of the East Midlands based Pashley tandem. Diane wrote, soon after collecting it in early September, "We've had a couple of goes on the tandem, and have found it much fun thanks. The handlebars for me would be a little more comfortable if at a slightly higher height, but it's giving us a great opportunity to see how we like tandem riding. We are adjusting still to the difference in balance from a bike for one, to a tandem but will crack it I'm sure."
At the start of 2015 she wrote, "Whilst we have now returned our borrowed tandem to your team, we can certainly say that we had so much fun using the tandem. Particularly exploring new places on holiday in Northumberland in October. It's a great way to see how well you both communicate with each other, and my fella proposed to me on this holiday, so clearly we passed the communication test!
This tandem experience certainly helped us decide that we'd definitely enjoy owning a tandem permanently, so we are recently new owners of an Orbit Routier sport tandem😉 Thanks very much for the loan. It's been a real pleasure."

At the start of 2015 they updated us with, "We've found a few routes in Lancashire and West Yorkshire that have become regular favourites (including a long, straight run along a road cutting through moorland and a circular route around a large reservoir) and we occasionally branch out and try for some new scenery (with varied levels of success). We've been managing to increase our mileage with each outing but there are some gradients that still stop us dead so we're aiming to work on that in 2015."

Her friend, Rachel, wrote just before the event, "We have had great fun on the tandem and I have been pedalling with Kirsty around our village in Buckinghamshire. We have got up to 15K and that is with hills. The cycle course at Crystal Palace is flat I believe. The tandem handles really nicely and I am a novice tandem rider. However, Kirsty is really thin and light and has good balance, so perhaps that helps as she is lighter than me. I just had it serviced as well".
Rachel afterwards wrote, "Yesterday was the big day and we got round the triathlon. Did the 15K cycle in 48:29 which includes a few hills and a push for about 200m before you can get on it. The tandem didn’t let us down. Quite a wiggly course testing my ability around S bends."
"... Kirsty had a lot of supporters there from Bucks Vision ...." "We did the whole triathlon in 1:48.
We are returning the tandem on Sunday to Ceri but I am sure I will ask to borrow it again soon for other blind people." They have put an extended article on our Facebook site.

All my kids think it's great because it has meant we've been able to go on some longer more adventurous rides as a whole family rather than the usual splintering off . As Peter said when I collected it, it does wobble quite a bit which might not suit some kids, but to be honest I think it just adds to the excitement for my son Seth! We have enjoyed the hire, and are definitely going to continue tandeming as much as possible. I'm not sure what your policy on repeat borrowing is, but we would be very interested in having another one from you in the future if it is on offer!"

Oscar from Addlestone
Oscar with his Dad, Douglas, collected the Surrey based Viking Salerno tandem, from Colin in early July 2014.
Douglas wrote, "We got out on the tandem this evening. First I got my wife to go on the back to get a feel for the steering, weight and to work out the communication commands needed - 'ready?', '3-2-1 go', 'power', 'freewheel' and 'braking' were the ones we found most useful. Then Oscar got on. And straight away it all worked. We have got Oscar's right foot strapped on in a caged pedal and it works just well enough to keep his ankle from contacting the drivetrain. Oscar loved it and I could really feel him pedalling once we were up and running. In all we cycled about 2 miles including a freewheel down a motorway bridge which had him laughing out loud."

Sam from Bredon
Sam's Dad, David, collected the Dursley based Dawes Discovery tandem from me in late June 2014.
David wrote, "Many thanks for the use of the tandem. Sam has been having a great time, even wanting to go out in the rain! We have found that using clipless pedals is a great way of keeping Sam’s feet safely on the pedals, and are looking forwards to exploring more local roads and bridleways. Still working on ways to get him to pedal, rather than talk, when going up hill! – At least it’s good exercise for me!"
In early September he updated us with, "We managed to take the tandem down to the New Forest for a few days during the school holidays - a few photos attached. It's a great area for cycling, with lots of tracks along with small, fairly quiet roads. Sam really enjoys going out, and also showing the tandem to friends. He's even got the hang of pedalling up hills, well sometimes! Being able to try the tandem has allowed us to decide that buying one ourselves is definitely worthwhile, and we are now on the look-out for a second hand bargain."

Julia wrote in mid-June, "We have just returned from our first ride: Ashy and I were on the tandem and cycled right through to Ware. This is something we would not have been able to do on single bikes as Ash doesn’t yet have the strength or stamina. So it was a great achievement for him.
I have attached a few photos: one of which is with Kevin who hasn’t yet plucked up the courage to take the lead on the bike, but I'm hoping he will have a go next week.
Thanks again for supporting us with this, I will keep you posted."

We have really enjoyed using the tag along, so much so, we bought one for Faye's younger sister.... Just would like to say a huge Thank you to all at Charlotte's Tandems for giving us a great opportunity to try something new with our children.
We found that this is one of the best activities we can do as a family and as a result of this we have decided that weekend bike trips are a great way to spend time together and will be taking part in many in the future.
Faye is much calmer and gets very excited about using the tag along. Thank you for making our weekends enjoyable!!! ...........Thanks again for all your help, it really has changed our family dynamics for the better."

We enjoyed several outings on the tandem around where we live. The greatest benefit for Daniel has been the fact that he can go out and enjoy himself and do exercise without the fear of dogs bounding up to him - a key problem we experience when he goes anywhere outside on foot!
It has been nearly a year since he got on a bike, but he remembered how to get on - just about! It is wonderful he is able to experience bike riding in this way. It has also helped increase the bond between dad and son as it provides opportunity to have a good chat whilst pedaling!"

Emily from Wotton-under-Edge
Emily and her family returned the Dursley based tag-along trike and collected a tag-along bike at the start of June 2014. In early June, Julie took Will for a 17 mile ride and in the later half of June he wrote, "Please find photo, hopefully. Obviously being blind, they’re not my strong point, but I am reliably informed there is one there."
"When my colleague Julie walked in to my office and said, ‘Fancy doing a charity bike ride on one of those tandem things?’ I jumped at the chance, but then tandems are pretty rare things, expensive too, so how to get hold of one? I was thrilled to discover Charlotte’s Tandems. It’s been 20 years since I had the sight to ride my own bike, and it’s just great being out on the road again. We’ve already cracked a couple of decent rides, with the main event only a week away. It’s great fun, and Julie and I are really enjoying the challenge."
He's also been Tweeting about us.

It's an amazing charity and I'm hoping to raise some funds for them although all they have asked for is to raise the profile of the charity."

Paige had never cycled so far and was so chuffed to be able to. The freedom she felt was evident from her squeals of delight. She was definitely part of the 'ride' and gained so much not only physically but also got a true concept of roads, hazards, indicating and general safety which you don't get being visually impaired sitting in a comfy car!"

They were all very excited and will let us know all about their adventures through our Facebook site.
Bethany from Thingwall
Lynne (Bethany's Mum) met Helper Brian at a Mencap event at the end of January 2014 and collected the Burley Samba tandem from him three days later. Here they are on Meols Promenade. Helper Brian says that "Bethany was a star on her first attempt" and that the tandem is "Very comfortable to ride, one of the best I have in stock".
Mark from Birmingham
Mark collected the huge Cannondale road tandem in mid-January 2014. He is a blind athlete and hopes to get into triathlons. He hasn't riden it much over the winter yet.
John from Lancashire
David collected the Unicorn tandem from Ruth in Gargrave in mid-January 2014 for John to use. John has riden David's own tandem before and thought it was "fantastic", so now he has his own from us.
Katie from Bromborough
Katie and her Dad, Ant, collected one of the Cheshire based Viking tandems from Brian in mid-January 2014. They will let us know how they get on.
Tony from the Wirral
Tim and a friend collected the Cheshire based Viking tandem for use by Tony in mid-January 2014. Here is Tony with Tim. Tony's Mum, Nathalie wrote in late March, "He has really enjoyed the experience, it has given him confidence".
